Ooty vs Kodaikanal: Which Hill Station Should You Choose?
The two are often pitched against each other. They are genuinely different trips — one busy and full of attractions, one quieter and more compact.
The short answer
Choose Ooty if you want more to do — the toy train, botanical gardens, tea estates, Coonoor day trips and a lively town. Choose Kodaikanal if you want somewhere quieter, more compact and more walkable, built around a lake and misty pine forests. Both sit around 2,100–2,240 metres and both are cool year-round.
Crowds and character
Ooty is the larger and more developed of the two, the old summer capital of the Madras Presidency, and it gets busy — especially in the April–June peak. Kodaikanal is smaller and feels calmer, with the walkable lake at its centre and viewpoints like Coaker's Walk and Dolphin's Nose a short distance out. Families with a packed sightseeing list often prefer Ooty; couples and quieter groups often prefer Kodai.
The drives
Ooty is well connected — from Chennai, Bangalore, Mysore and Coimbatore — and the approach through Bandipur or up the Nilgiri ghat is a highlight in itself. Kodaikanal is a little more out of the way and the Law's Ghat climb is genuinely winding. Both routes have tight sections where a shorter-wheelbase vehicle is more comfortable for a group.
Can you do both?
They are about 250 km apart, so combining them means real driving, but it is done — usually as a longer Nilgiris-and-Palani circuit. If your group has the days, it makes a rewarding trip; if not, pick the one that matches the pace you want.
