Chikmagalur is the weekend that Bangalore groups book when Coorg is full. At 245 km via Hassan it is a four-and-a-half-hour run on good highway, and the hills around Mullayanagiri — Karnataka's highest peak at 1,930 m — are less crowded than Kodagu.
A caution worth stating plainly: the final approach road to the Mullayanagiri summit is narrow, steep and single-lane with passing bays. We run the 10+1 SWB there and will decline to take a 16+1 LWB up it. Larger groups are dropped at the Sarpadhari base and cover the last stretch by local jeep, which is standard practice on that hill.
Force Urbania Rental for the Bangalore to Chikmagalur Route
We are direct about one limit on this Urbania rental: the 16+1 LWB does not go up the Mullayanagiri summit road. It is narrow, steep and single-lane with limited passing bays, and it is not a place to reverse a long-wheelbase van. Large groups are dropped at the Sarpadhari base for a local jeep, which is standard practice on that hill. For everything else the 10+1 SWB Force Urbania hire is ideal, and the 12+1 MWB handles the main circuit comfortably.
About Chikmagalur
Chikmagalur is where coffee was first cultivated in India — legend has Baba Budan smuggling seven beans out of Yemen in the seventeenth century and planting them on the range that now bears his name. Mullayanagiri, at 1,930 metres, is the highest peak in Karnataka, reached by a ridge road with a small temple at the summit. Kemmangundi and the Z Point viewpoint sit deeper in the Bababudan range, with Hebbe Falls dropping in two stages through coffee estate country.
