Kodaikanal is a 520 km haul from Chennai, and the last 65 km from Palani is a continuous ghat climb of nearly forty hairpin bends. This is a route where vehicle choice genuinely matters: we strongly recommend the 10+1 SWB Urbania, whose shorter wheelbase and tighter turning circle make the Law's Ghat Road climb far less of an ordeal than a long-wheelbase vehicle attempting the same bends.
Groups typically break the outbound journey at Trichy or Dindigul rather than driving it in one push. Once on the hill, the Urbania's enclosed cabin and heater matter more than you would expect — Kodai mornings sit around 10°C, and the vehicle becomes the group's warm base between viewpoints.
Force Urbania Rental for the Chennai to Kodaikanal Route
Vehicle choice matters more on this Urbania rental than on any other route we run. Law's Ghat Road has close to forty hairpins and several are tight enough that a long-wheelbase van needs a multi-point turn, so we push groups toward the 10+1 SWB Force Urbania hire wherever headcount allows. Every driver rostered on this route is ghat-rated by policy. On the hill itself the enclosed cabin and heater matter more than most people expect — a Kodai morning sits around 10°C and the van becomes the group's warm base between viewpoints.
About Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal sits at 2,100 metres in the Palani hills, built by American missionaries in the 1840s as a hot-season retreat and still noticeably cooler and quieter than Ooty. The star-shaped lake at its centre is the reference point for everything else: Coaker's Walk runs along a cliff edge with valley views on clear mornings, Bryant Park holds the botanical collection, and the Pillar Rocks and Guna Cave viewpoints sit a few kilometres out. Berijam Lake, deeper into reserved forest, needs a permit capped daily by the forest department.
