This is the classic South Tamil Nadu temple circuit and one of our most-booked family group packages. It pairs the Meenakshi Amman temple at Madurai with the Ramanathaswamy temple at Rameshwaram, connected by the Pamban bridge crossing onto the island.

It is a long circuit — around 1,400 km all in — which makes vehicle comfort the deciding factor rather than manoeuvrability. The 12+1 MWB is the sweet spot here: enough boot space for a multi-day family trip, and reclining seats that matter across nine-and-a-half-hour driving days.

Force Urbania Rental for the Chennai to Rameshwaram Route

Across a 1,400 km circuit, comfort outweighs manoeuvrability in choosing an Urbania rental. There is no serious ghat section on this route, so the 12+1 MWB Force Urbania hire is our standard recommendation — reclining seats and boot space for a multi-day family trip matter far more here than a tight turning circle. Groups travelling with elderly members should look at the Executive Lounge variant, whose captain recliners are a genuinely different experience over nine-and-a-half-hour driving days.

About Rameshwaram

Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, built in concentric squares around the Meenakshi Amman temple, whose fourteen gopurams are covered in thousands of painted stucco figures. Rameshwaram, 170 km east on an island reached by the Pamban bridge, holds the Ramanathaswamy temple and the longest temple corridor in India. At the island's tip lies Dhanushkodi, a town destroyed by the 1964 cyclone and left as ruins on a sandspit running toward Sri Lanka.

Know Before You Ride

Chennai to Madurai & Rameshwaram Tour — Questions

Yes. The road to Arichal Munai was fully metalled some years ago and commercial vehicles run it daily. The old practice of transferring to a local jeep at Mukundarayar Chathiram no longer applies for the main road.

The road bridge is about 2.3 km and takes only a few minutes to cross, running alongside the railway bridge. It is a highlight of the trip — tell your driver if the group wants a photo halt at the viewpoint on the mainland side.

Three nights covers Madurai and Rameshwaram comfortably. Groups wanting to add Kanyakumari at the southern tip should budget a fifth day, since it is a further 300 km from Rameshwaram.
